PLACID CAT

CHAPTER 1

THE BIRTH AND CHILDHOOD...

MAY, 1999

Steve Biggs, Mark Lunn and Steven Whitlock meet to discuss the recording of 'Heartlands', a song dedicated to the city of Birmingham. Written by Biggs and Whitlock, the song was entered into a local competition run by the Birmingham Hippodrome. As the weeks progress, more songs are revealed and practised in the safety of their own homes.

Mark plays 'Here She Comes' to Steven Whitlock, immediatley impressed, they record a draught of the piece to act as a notepad until additional musicians are found.

 

13thJUNE, 1999

WOUNDED SPIRIT make their last live performance in the United Kingdom. The concert, at The Robin2 club in Bilston, features some 'special guests'. Two of these guests turn out to be Mark and Steven playing 'Here She Comes' with help from John 'o' Neil on drums. The crowd receives the performance warmly and a young lady in the audience, to whom the song is dedicated, breaks down in floods of tears.

 

20thJUNE, 1999

'Heartlands' is recorded at the MadHats studios in Walsall. It features Terry Ebanks (wounded spirit) on Bass Guitar and took over 8 hours to record and mix.

 

JUNE/JULY, 1999

Mark joins 'Wounded Spirit' for a tour of Spain. Biggs plays lead and shows Mark the structure, melody and timing for their set-list. Wounded Spirit are quickly impressed by his ability to pick up the songs in mere hours. They travel from the Basque areas of Spain, all the way down to the South-Eastern parts of Cuenca and Alecante.

Television appearances by Jason Kelly and Mark give the band a 'buzz' feeling of success, however upon return to England, the band which had lasted over a decade - split up!

Mark convinces Biggs join a new group with him and Whitlock. Biggs agrees...

 

10thSEPT, 1999

Biggs, Lunn and Whitlock appear on The Late Show - BBC RADIO WM with presenters Tony & Julie. The 'Heartlands' song is aired for the first time to the public. Tony reveals that the Hippodrome are still choosing the winners of the competition. The band also announces that they have changed their name from 'Steve and Steve' (which was functional only for the duration of the competition) to 'PLACID CAT' and that they have acquired a full time drummer (Mr Jamie Malpass).

Whitlock explains that the name was created whilst he and Biggs were walking through Birmingham. Whitlock was at a slower pace and so Biggs turned round and told him "you're just like a placid cat"...

 

OCT, NOV, DEC 1999

The band create new songs and concentrate on reheasal. Promotional posters are created for the debut gig in January.

Marks original design for the Union Flag cat logo, had a cat in a sitting position until the image finally settled to one of a standing feline.

 

16thJAN, 2000

The debut, live performance of PLACID CAT at The Robin2, Bilston. Supported by 'Weed', a rock band, PLACID CAT bring the roof down with their unique style.

The set opens up to the theme 'On Her Majestys Secret Service' from the James Bond film of the same name.

The Cats are pressed by the audience to perform two encores, finishing the gig with 'Stand Up' featuring Jason Kelly (Wounded Spirit) as guest vocals.

The band were surprised at the success of the concert, considering only £18.78 was used on promotion for the event.

 

27thFEB, 2000

Steven and Mark make a surprise appearance at Ronnie Scotts in Birmingham, performing an accoustic set of PLACID CAT songs.

 

28thMAR, 2000

Drummer Jamie Malpass quits, less than one week before a Make-Or-Break recording session at a studio in Redditch. Stunned by the loss, PLACID CAT attempts to find a drummer but, in the end, is left to foot the bill of a late cancellation fee...

 

APRIL, 2000

Mark 'Max' Bygraves joins the band as the new drummer. Meeting up with band one Saturday afternoon he was given a demo tape to listen to before deciding whether or not he would join. Within an hour he phoned back with the exclaimation: "I want in!"

PLACID CAT is reborn...
